Ashraf always recommend CCleaner as best FREE alternative to free up your HD from junk.
Just for once I totally disagree with him: in fact, during my tests, PRIVAZER has literally destroyed the overrated CCleaner by removing about 2 GB of junkware and cleaning tons of registry errors/objects missed by CCleaner (and it was also able to recover about 1GB of RAM thanks to its special function not available in CCleaner).
That being said, another smarter way to free up Disk Space, besides using PORTABLE APPS instead of ordinary installers (by the way, do you know that with the right tools it's possible to turn almost any app into a PORTABLE one without being a programmer?), is to create a TEMPORARY FOLDER so as to store there all those kind of files & folders you need just for a short period of time.

However if you use this magic FREE tool, you can even solve the temporary files clutter issue to the root of the problem without any hassle:

HINT to the DEVELOPER: How about give tools like this for FREE and focus your attention on different kind of apps?? ^_^

*You can add your own file extensions to erase
*Has an exceptions list which tells 1-abc.net Hard Drive Washer to never delete specific folders and files
Cons
*A $19.99 program that only deletes temp/junk files and has no other features?! Today isn't April Fool's, is it? (Yes, I know this is a free giveaway today -- my point still stands.)

Review of best free system/privacy/temp/junk cleaner for Windows
Final Verdict

Installed on a Win 8.1 64 Bit System without problems. Double checked eMail to register, okay, why not. Registered without problems.
I run first my standard cleaner : Ccleaner. Then a small cleaner, which I use often: DiskMax.
The Hard Driver washer found after a run about 5 times longer than Ccleaner:
- 12 .tmp files, some are in use and cannot be deleted. You can make an exception rule for these...
- 874 log files, all of them can really be deleted
- 2 really useless thumbs.db in directory without images
- 19 files with extensions .old, .chk, .err, and File_id.diz
Because I use the .old for "older" files, I did not delete these, and unchecked this extension for future search.
The interface of the files to be deleted is clear and you select whatever. liked this program and it will stay on my computer.
Thanks!
Unfortunately, I don't recommend anything from 1-abc.net. The reason being that their install & registration locking process tends to throw a lot of junk into the registry, amongst other issues. Their uninstall process does not remove these registry entries. The big problem is that some of their apps which have context menu additions (right-click menu) don't get removed, resulting in Windows Explorer crashing (hanging, or searching for a long time & restarting - slow performance). The same thing occurs with Kingsoft Office and offerings from other sloppy developers.
A software of this type should be portable. Otherwise it brings new junk with it.
And please keep in mind when a software is finding more faults in the registry than e.g. CCleaner portable (+ CCEnhancer) how will you know whether your system will remain stable some time afterwards. Not the cleaner which finds most is best but the one which keeps your system stable in spite of its cleaning process.
And sometimes logfiles contain information in case your system catches "a cold".
And it's a good time for backing up your system before trying an unknown cleaner.
For accelerating your system don't forget defragmenting if it's not automatic (as with later Windows) and it's switched on.
For more acceleration look up your autostart programs - I once collected over 300 of them and quite a lot of them I could block without problems with Anvir Pro from some GOTD or cover DVD - there is a free version, too, with less information about single autostarts - you have to search yourself. And there is good old and permanently updated free Autoruns from Microsoft/Sysinternals. All of them can discriminate between Windows, MS programs and others. Never block true Windows and MS ones. Only do block "others" if you know what you are doing. But I'm sure e.g. that not every updater needs autostart resources and especially not if it belogs to a giveaway! And if you know there won't be any updates avaible e.g. for XP and older printer's drivers or from some vanished company please block autostart in any case.
Sometimes there are autostart programs you just blocked and after a restart they are back again. I wouldn't trust the corresponding software very much!
