@1 Just because it's not of use to you does not mean it's not useful to others.
Always amazed how quick people are to vote thumbs down, or post something negative. Folks, you don't have to download it if you don't want it.
1. "[...] for dedicated servers.". This is the wrong place for such software. (Or modify description accordingly).
Why? (a) If I had a dedicated server, it would run on some Unix flavor. When you want reliability and security, Microsoft is certainly not the first choice (who wants to shutdown a server for security updates almost every day?). Then checking logs would be done using native server scripting tools. (b) If, like many people, I'd use a cheaper mutualized server, then I could have a use of this kind of software. But I'd be unlucky with this GOTD because a mutualized server is not a dedicated server.
2. No detailed features, no user guide: the developer's website is full of emptyness. It is not my job to find out what this product does exactly, and HOW it does it (which is of most importance regarding IP tracking).
3. Given the lack of explanations, had to find some screenshots. The ones I found always show the same thing: errors (not all though) have a reddish background. Don't know about you but I find $50 for coloring lines in a text file a bit expensive and 11 MB (lol) overkill.
Thumbs down.
For anyone with use of the software, here's a little review.
I downloaded some logs from my server to test this out. At first I downloaded some access logs, but the program only works with error log files. This makes sense, but is also a red flag for me. Any good security program will be looking at both access & error logs. After all - a brute force password attack isn't going to show up in the error logs!
So, I downloaded the error logs of a few of the sites I host. None of them are all that big, so I don't have too much to report here. The program does a nice job of classifying each of the line entries under the various tabs the program has (which act sort of like categories.) It gives you a really nice visual representation of what's going on. If you're the type to manually look over logs, this program may be of interest to you.
If however, you're a true security hound - then you know as well as I that you already have scripts in place on your server to process the logs and look for suspicious activity - and it probably looks at both access & error logs. This is the ideal solution as the program can cut the hacks off at the source by adding firewall rules or using other methods to say bye-bye to the hackers.
I was unable to test the FTP functionality in the software - I have FTP turned off on my server and from what I can tell, the program only supports normal FTP (no FTPS or SFTP...)
All in all, not a keeper IMHO.
I honestly "like" the variety of software that GOTD offers, but when it comes to business' - I have owned a few - proper grammar & especially spelling, were paramount to make others aware & respect your offerings; and, today - with spell-check - there is NO reason why a 'program' aimed at business, should not at least adhere to what we had drilled into our heads (for me 16 years - Bach. of Bus. Admin.) I do trust with my business, someone who is so casual with theirs. Thank you GOTD - keep up the great job - love helping wherever I can.
Wouldn't be nice if we could see how many actual downloads there are, instead of just the up and down votes.
Thanks GOTD for all the daily offerings. Much appreciated...
