PCHand Media Converter Pro is a nice app, both for what it does & what it doesn't do... It does basic conversion or transcoding without any hassles, & it doesn't interfere with Windows, or break your other software. It does take up about 42MB with 132 files, 8 folders, & using the Portable App Creator [portableapps.com forum] you should be able to pretty easily make it portable.

Based on the open source Media Player (orig. for Linux) & the Mencoder that goes along with it, PCHand Media Converter Pro has an interesting option to use either OpenGL or DirectX for the Media Player previews -- it's under options in the menu, & could be important on some systems to get preview working properly. Otherwise you either import files into the job list, or use the DVD button to open a DVD folder or disc, eliminating the need to copy a DVD with only one VOB file using DVD Shrink. [BTW, while it's advertised to rip DVDs with DRM, I'm frankly skeptical -- SlySoft & DVDFab are pretty much the only companies making/selling software to get around DVD/BD DRM (to create backups etc), & they're updated constantly as new protections come out.]

To give it a quick test I used a DVD already on a hard drive as the source, trimming the clip to 3 minutes [as already posted, right click the file in the job list to trim]. Then I selected the Zune profile from the list setting the frame size to 320 X 240 [the profiles, customization, & the way they're managed are IMHO towards the low end of average, but should be workable for most]. PCHand Media Converter Pro got the aspect ratio right [ :-) ], took 30 seconds to transcode the clip at 30 fps [fps on AUTO], used primarily 1 core of an AMD quad [multi-core was selected in the app's options], & if it used my ATI GPU it didn't show up in GPU-Z. [A's Video Converter (designed for ATI cards) is still the champ at 700+ fps for the same transcode]. Quality of the encoded wmv file was good -- while a video bit rate of 1500 was selected in PCHand Media Converter Pro, MediaInfo shows the clip as 949 Kbps. [Unless it's *Really* bad, I don't know that too many people worry all that much about quality if/when the video's going to be played with a handheld or cell, but if you're the exception look for apps that offer multiple encoding passes -- today's GOTD like most converters doesn't.]

Finally, while PCHand Media Converter Pro is billed as an HD converter [and it might/might not do all right as one], I think those most likely to be interested haven't converted HD yet. ;-) Files can be huge & in formats that are *very* difficult to work with. Because you're dealing with so many pixels, re-sizing takes a lot of both horsepower & time -- just previewing the originals can be hard. Add in most of the software tools are at a very early stage compared to those used with/for DVDs. I'm NOT trying to discourage anyone from working with HD, but rather saying if you simply want to put video on a handheld or cell, you'd probably be doing yourself a big favor by starting off with standard definition video, like a DVD.

Converted an 80MB AVI file to iPod MP4. Result was a 320MB file - unecessarily large for an iPod in my opinion.

It's very simple converter, with somehow standard options which have more accurate settings than average converters(for example you can type the desired resolution).

Anyway there is lack of advanced settings compared to Daniusoft converter for example (Daniusoft have also the option to trim the video, put watermark (text or image), picture corrections, apply various filters like b&w, old newspaper, etc.. and increase or decrease the audio volume.)

The conversion is extremely fast even on older pc, but the final quality is not very good. Specially on default settings the picture is blurred with annoying "bricks" all over. Increasing the bitrate and lowering the resolution brings much better results, excellent in some cases, but then the file size can be too big for web use for example (flv).

All in all a good converter if you have to do just a basic conversion and if the file size is not a concern. Worth a try for sure.

Another nice GUI frontend for the MPlayer/MEncoder tools.
Extra points for PCHand for showing their original files and most of all for including the GPL license itself.

PCHand is even better then last weeks offer. This frontend can do more, and is even cheaper!
