@6 I'm know for a fact there are a bazillion freeware programs that can shutdown your computer.

But you are comparing apples with oranges.

This software is designed for organisations or larger networks where you want to centralise the shutdown/reboot/wake up/lock of Multiple PCs.

This software works with Active Directory - something most larger windows networks are based on.

Even the price - $200. Sounds expensive? Well that includes 100 client licenses - so if you have 100 PCs $200 is all you pay.

There will be people who will come forward and say... yep I could whack something together with freeware for under $200 - well businesses I've worked for cost their developers out at $100 per hour - so you have 2 hours to have a solution in place, tested and running.

When it comes to the buy or build decision - in this case lots of companies would likely choose to buy - and be done with it (to build would cost a lot more).

So this has nothing to offer you on your small home network? Probably not.

But so you don't feel left out - there are some smarter power apps available that let you manage shutdowns and wakeups with a bit more control (than the usual power off in 60 seconds type of apps).

TOff - Initiate "power options" based on a timer, or a predetermined condition (lack of keyboard, mouse, CPU activity etc) http://dennisbabkin.com/toff/

WakeupOnStandby - Wake a PC from Sleep at a predetermined time - automate a series of actions. Can then return PC to sleep once actions have completed. http://dennisbabkin.com/wosb/

Granola - Save money and use less power while your PC is running. Runs your CPU with less power (and cooler) - free for individual PCs. http://grano.la/

$200 for a build in routine ? And the excuse is:

Aprel Technologies: "The program performs efficiently in enterprise-scale network with hundreds of computers and can be used just as well in a smaller network of just a few PC. It allows network administrators to shutdown, reboot, hibernate or wake up (Wake-on-LAN) multiple machines simultaneously."

There is way cheaper (and better) solutions on the internet, that is able to do the same work !

As an administrator you have the full access to the network anyways ! Therefore do you only have to turn on the remote ports, at each PC in the network ! And to ease things a little bit you can find a freeware remote program that can do the same or more !

$200? No thanks.

I use the freeware Shutdown Scheduler... it never fails.

@3 - Obviously if you have the authority to shut down the companies PCs, because you are the network administrator - you probably also have the ability to modify the rules on internal firewalls to permit that shutdown to take place.

Many of the regular GOTD visitors are home users (including myself) and this software is obviously not for us. I have 3 computers in my home and each serves it purpose only when someone, whose machine it is, is sitting at it. Really not that hard to train those in our homes to hit sleep, hibernate or shutdown when they know they are finished for a while or for the day. Kids may protest but removing the power cord for a day or two will make them realize you are serious.

I'd suggest that, since this is meant for big business, schools, and such and the commercial limitations are lifted (Thanks Aprel) that if you know someone that works at a place that has many networked machines and that might have use for this software that that you contact them and let them know of this deal.

Re: the price, $200 for 100 computers. Two bucks each??? - Sounds cheap to me... I wonder how many complaining about the price have use for this program?

I won't have use for this but I know someone that might. How about you? Spread the word. - Thanks GOTD and Aprel.
