First I want to say that in the past, after installing, all Image file types imaginable seemed to open with Zoner, some items I like to have a choice of what to open them with, and especially the windows preview app which lets you see the image, and optionally open it from a list of available apps...but that was no longer a choice, since Zoner took control. It may have been an option that I missed, but I find it hard to believe I would miss something like that. Secondly, If I remember correctly, When I changed the default app to open with what I wanted them to open with, Zoner took them back without even a hint of a notification. I recommend when installing, pay close attention and create a restore point! before you install the app.

Yes, when you install, you have two options - Express install and Custom. I clicked 'Next', but did one of those 'cold shivers' as I then noticed the Express would also change 'image associations'. Grr.
I normally select 'Custom' as the Express option on freeware applications generally also installs toolbars, add-ons, coupon applications, etc, but I assumed wrong this time!

I had version 14 from an earlier giveaway. I chos to install it into the same folder. The installation was smooth and easy. Some points you will want to consider. First, definitely choose the custom install. Otherwise you may find Zoner has taken over all of your image types. That's fine if that is what you want. Not so good if you don't. Next, Zoner has set up an auto update function to be placed in your startup routine so it will run each time you start up your computer. I used Winpatrol to stop this. Even worse, every time you start the program it attempts this same startup insertion. I have not found a way to disable it. Lastly, go to the settings. Zoner is set to gather information from you anonymously. You may want to uncheck this option. All in all the program is good. The install and options could use some fine tuning. Hello there, Erik Piper from Zoner, Inc. customer support here with answers to questions, and comments on issues, from these comments above!

Express Installation is all about making decisions for the user - that’s why it’s Express. If you want to make those decisions yourself, that’s is great, because you are taking control over your own computing! And when you want that, do like people are saying - go Custom everytime.

@Chewy (#2): Zoner Photo Studio becomes the “Default Program” (the double-click program) in Windows for pictures if you install it with Express Installation. Use Custom Installation to see this and other options during installation. To change the Windows Default Program, use the Windows Control panel. You can change it there to anything you like even if Zoner has been as default.

Zoner doesn’t do anything to remove or restrict the standard Windows methods for work with Default Programs; I don’t know what you ran into there, but I promise it wasn’t some nefarious behavior by us.

Just to hammer in one thing - Default Programs aren’t control over your images - they’re just the thing-that-happens-in-Windows for double clicks and some other actions. You can still open pictures in any program you like, just not with a double-click, etc., unless you make that other program the Default. In short: your pictures are not inside of or in possession of Zoner, etc., anymore than your text files are inside Notepad when it’s the default program for .txt.

@dadams (#5): Anonymized information collection is, well, anonymized, with no information about who you are, or that could be used to find out who you are. It tells us what people click and don’t click. If you want a Zoner Photo Studio in the future that has more of what you use and is less cluttered with what you don’t use, because we have solid information on what people use and don’t use, then do us - and yourself, a bit - a favor and leave it on. :-)

Here’s the setting inside ZPS to turn off the update check on Windows startup:

Settings > Preferences... > Integration > Check for updates on system startup

The checker program is tiny, and blah de blah, but... that’s all the arguing about it you’ll get out of me. :-)
